romcoms as a genre might be a vacuous endeavour. but there's nothing more pretentious than the anti-romcom, whose well-meaning intentions might be to challenge the thought processes of the highly-cerebral but all it accomplishes is simply annoy the regular viewer.
i reckon that my last five girlfriends is probably one such project. it's not funny at all. the protagonist moans about his former girlfriends against the backdrop of roller coaster rides, voiceovers, talking stuffed toys, fake adverts, mindless clips and other devices that distract the flow of the story. why couldn't he find the one? because it's a movie and there should be a thing called love.
